Privacy Policy
What we do with your information
In short
- You don't need an account to use the app. Your Saved Events and last search stay on your device.
- The app counts how many times each event is viewed, saved and has its ticket link tapped. These counts don't identify you.
- We don't sell your information, show advertising, or build profiles of you.
- Event organisers: a promoter account stores your email address and the events you submit. If we contact you about a free listing, we use the contact email published on your event listing, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Scope
This policy covers the Above The Rock mobile app and the abovetherock.com.au website, both published by MCGC Consulting (“we”). Above The Rock helps people discover local events — community fairs, markets, theatre, gigs and sport — through a swipeable card interface. It explains what we collect from people using the app, from event organisers with a promoter account, and from event organisers we contact about a free listing.
Using the app
You don't need an account. These are stored only on your device:
- Saved Events
- The events you've saved.
- Last search
- Your most recent filter selections, remembered for convenience.
Event engagement counts. When you open an event's details, save it, or tap its ticket link, the app adds one to a daily count for that event in our database. We don't store your name, an account, a device identifier, your location or anything else that identifies you with these counts. Organisers see the counts for their own events, and our team sees totals.
Tapping a venue opens Google Maps, and tapping a ticket link opens the organiser's or ticket seller's website. Their own privacy policies apply there.
Promoter accounts
If you create a promoter account on the website, we store your email address (through Firebase Authentication) and the event details you submit, including any image you upload. We use these to review your events, publish the approved ones in the app, and show you how your events are performing. When you look up a venue or address, what you type is sent to Google to suggest matching places.
Event organisers we contact about a free listing
To help people find more local events, we look for upcoming events published on public websites such as tourism, council and organisers' own event pages. Our search tool uses an AI service (Anthropic's Claude) to read those public pages.
- What we collect: the event's details and the contact email or phone number published with it, and the page we found it on.
- Why: to offer you a free listing for that event. Nothing we find is published unless you accept and our team approves it.
- How we contact you: a member of our team emails you individually from listings@abovetherock.com.au, about your event, no more than once every 30 days. We never email an address whose listing asks not to receive unsolicited messages.
- What we keep: a record of the offer we sent and your responses. If you accept, the event goes into our normal review process; if you then create a promoter account from the offer page, the listing is added to your account.
- Opting out: every email has an unsubscribe link, which takes effect immediately. You can also reply asking us not to contact you. Either way, your address goes on our do-not-contact list.
How we use information
- Saved Events and your last search restore your app between sessions.
- Engagement counts show organisers and our team how events are performing.
- Promoter and organiser information is used to review, publish and manage event listings, and to contact organisers about free listings as described above.
- We don't sell or rent information, show advertising, or use information to profile anyone.
Service providers
We use these providers to run Above The Rock. They handle information only to provide their service to us:
- Google Firebase
- Our database (stored in Sydney, Australia), promoter sign-in, file storage, website hosting and server functions.
- Google Maps Platform
- Venue and address suggestions in the promoter portal.
- Anthropic
- AI-assisted search of public web pages for upcoming events. We don't send information about app users.
- Microsoft 365
- Our email, including the free-listing offers we send and replies we receive.
- Resend
- Automated notification emails to our own team.
Some of these providers may process information outside Australia, including in the United States.
How long we keep information
- Information on your device stays until you clear it or uninstall the app.
- Engagement counts are kept for as long as the event's listing is kept.
- Promoter accounts and their events are kept until you ask us to delete them.
- Offer records for organisers we've contacted are kept for up to two years after our last contact.
- Do-not-contact entries are kept permanently, so we can keep honouring them.
Your choices
Uninstalling the app removes everything stored on your device. To see, correct or delete information we hold about you — a promoter account, its events, or an organiser's offer records — contact us below. Organisers can stop all outreach with the unsubscribe link in our email.
Device permissions
Above The Rock does not request access to your camera, precise or approximate location, contacts, photos, or microphone.
Children
Above The Rock is a general-audience app and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may add optional features in future, such as SMS alerts for new events. If a feature needs new information from you, we'll update this policy and the app's store privacy details before the feature goes live, not after.
Contact
Questions or requests about this policy can be sent to info@abovetherock.com.au. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
